Social sharing

Visitors on mobile need to share your URLs on Facebook, Twitter and other social media. Zero back-end impact, zero risk

Deploying Mobify's platform is as easy as adding a single JavaScript tag to your web pages. Mobify's tag does not load any synchronous external resources for users on opted-out browsers (desktop browsers, for example) and has no performance impact on these visitors. Competing solutions must integrate at your datacenter as an appliance or use a mobile proxy server located in the cloud, typically EC2. Integrations from these providers must take one of two approaches:

  1. Drive all traffic, including desktop traffic, through a web appliance that will route traffic to the correct back-end using device user-agent string. This approach entails a significant change to your back-end and significant risk as service outages can affect desktop traffic.

  2. The second approach is to redirect traffic to a proxy server located in the cloud. This proxy server scrapes content from your servers. This approach requires deployment of either a JavaScript snippet to perform the redirect which can be slow and may require a blocking 3rd party call that can slow down desktop visitors or redirect logic deployed at the web server level. The latter approach is based on user-agent strings which is both inaccurate and entails extensive integration with your application and web servers as well as added complexity for your caching layers, including CDNs, as different content will be served for different user agents.

The same interface provides a complete audit trail, revision history and allows you to roll forward or roll back to any version of your mobile or tablet website with a single click.

Zero downtime

Mobify's platform does not require an additional application server environment. All competing solutions require an application server environment either in your datacenters or located in the cloud in addition to your current environment. Application servers have inherent complexity and limitations on scalability. Application servers must execute code and contain decision-making logic. This limits the number of edge locations that can be supported and the amount of redundancy that can be achieved.

Mobify's platform builds and delivers JavaScript content. Once the JavaScript for a site is built, the content of the JavaScript is static. The static nature of this content means that Mobify can deploy and cache it across multiple redundant CDNs using IP and DNS anycast layers. Mobify's platform is delivered from more than 40 POPs globally distributed and fully redundant. The Mobify.js delivery network has not had a service disruption since going live in 2010.

Scalability

Application servers have a fixed capacity and all competing solutions require an application server environment. The only way to grow this capacity is to add application servers – this is inherently risky, complex and slow.

Seasonality may drive huge swings in traffic to your servers. Mobify's platform is unaffected by seasonality and usage spikes because of the connectivity and number of edge locations we serve from and the static nature of what we deliver.

Mobify's customers include major US retailers who experience high traffic volumes during the period leading up to and including Black Friday. The Mobify.js delivery network has never had a service disruption since going live in 2010.

Cache-consistency and hit ratio

With Mobify, the exact same HTML is sent to all site visitors.

Most solutions require serving different content to different visitors varying on the visitor's browser and operating system. This is challenging for caching content and adds complexity to your infrastructure. If your CDN or other caching layers are incorrectly configured, visitors will be directed to incorrect content for their device.

Even when correctly configured, serving different HTML for different visitors means that you are fragmenting your cache and decreasing the hit ratio of your caching layers. This can result in poorer visitor performance and increased application server load.

This problem becomes exaggerated as you continue to add support for new devices - if tablets need to be supported, for example, new rules will need to be deployed incurring additional risk and increasing cache fragmentation.

Performance

Mobify's platform does not require different HTML for different types of visitors and visitors are always directly connected to your web application environment. This means that your existing CDN and caching layers are leveraged to get the raw HTML to the visitor as quickly as possible.

95% of the bytes downloaded when visiting a web page are resources other than HTML. These resources typically consist of images, scripts and CSS. Mobify's cloud services will automatically optimize these resources for the specific browser characteristics of the smartphone or tablet. Mobify does not need to do user-agent sniffing to perform these optimizations.

Because Mobify is executing in the visitor's browser, Mobify can be aware of browser specifics that cannot be obtained from a user-agent string on the server. This includes actual screen resolution, which cannot be accurately detected server-side, as well as device connection type (3G, 4G, or Wi-Fi) and CPU speed. This information can be used to apply specific optimizations for devices that are not possible with a server-side solution.

Typical pages see a 25 - 75% performance improvement when using the Mobify platform depending on page content.

Script or image resources automatically optimized by Mobify's Cloud are delivered by Mobify's multiple caching CDN back-ends which are geoselected based on the user's location. In addition to being the fastest way to deliver mobile resources, Mobify's cloud will also decrease the data use on your existing CDN by between 15 - 30%.

Security

When you use Mobify's platform, visitors stay on your servers and on your data infrastructure. All form data, including payment card data, flows directly from the visiting phone or tablet directly to your web servers. Mobify does not store, transmit or process any payment card or any other form data from your visitors.

All other solutions that involve redirecting traffic through mobile proxy servers or other appliances must decrypt traffic. For all other solutions, you must hand the keys to the vault to a third party.
